Opening Hymn:  94 Come Let Us Join

First reading: Acts 4: 8-12

Text Box:
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, 'Rulers of the people and elders, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead.
This Jesus is "the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone." There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.'

Hymn: 203   He is Exalted

Gospel: Luke 24 13-33

Text Box: Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.
While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognising him. And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad.
Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?"
He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him."
Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them.
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognised him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?"
That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together.

Celebrating St John’s Centenary in 2007. Plans are underway for a series of events to celebrate our centenary next year. One of our ideas is to produce a history/ memoir of  St John’s. For this we need your help to produce pictures, photographs, memories, articles etc. to supplement the history of the church that has been researched by Ian Valentine. Begin to think what you might have access to,  perhaps you  have contacts with people who might have just the memories we need.

Centenary Appeal. If you look at the thermometer at the back of the church you will see that the total is now 64,000 euros. Thank you to everyone! Only 11,000 euros to go!

If you have not  seen the new leaflet explaining  the progress of the works please do be sure to pick one up the morning. All these works will be underway in the next few weeks under the watchful eye of Alan Runnicles.

There are yellow envelopes to be found at the back of the church. These are of special interest to those of you who would like to make a donation in Sterling. If the outside of the envelope is filled this is accepted by the UK inland revenue and enables the church to claim back the tax at a rate of 28p for every pound given. This is a simple tax efficient way to give. Please remember St John’s receives no funding from outside sources
