Sunday  4th October

Festival of St Francis of Assisi

Welcome to all this morning as we come to celebrate

the festival of the charismatic and compelling Saint

Francis of Assisi, and meditate together on some of his

Teachings, and offer praise as we sing hymns inspired

through him.

“ O Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts you in you” Psalm 84

Opening  Hymn: 9 All Creatures of Our God and King

Gloria on page 3 in the yellow service booklet.

Refrain:

Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest.

First reading:  Psalm 84

How lovely is your dwelling place,  O Lord Almighty!

My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord;

my heart and my flesh cry out  for the living God.

Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself,

where she may have her young— a place near your altar,

O Lord Almighty, my King and my God.

Blessed are those who dwell in your house;   they are ever praising you.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.

As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs;

the autumn rains also cover it with pools.

They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

Hear my prayer, O Lord God Almighty; listen to me, O God of Jacob.  Look upon our shield, O God; look with favour on your anointed one.  Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere;

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield;  the Lord bestows favour and honour;  no good thing does he withhold  from those whose walk is blameless.

O Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.

Hymn around the Gospel:  487 The Lord is My Song

Gospel  Reading.  Luke 18: 18-30

A certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honour your father and mother.'

"All these I have kept since I was a boy," he said.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Those who heard this asked, "Who then can be saved?"

Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

Peter said to him, "We have left all we had to follow you!"

"I tell you the truth," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life."
