17/12/2017 Carol Service - Our traditional candlelit carol service took place on Sunday evening, 17 December where we welcomed many visitors to an almost-full church, which was beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. The singing, led by the church choir, was heart-warming and many people had obviously come to start their Christmas celebrations at St John's. We hope they went away with the message of hope and peace in their hearts, as presented in the Chaplain's homily.
03/12/2017 Riviera Churches Advent Service - This year we hosted the annual Advent service of the Anglican churches along the Riviera on Sunday 3 December, and welcomed visitors from Marseille, Lorgues with Fayence, Cannes and Menton. The service took the form of a carol service, with Advent hymns and readings. The choir comprised singers from 3 churches and contributed an anthem. We enjoyed home-made sausage rolls, mince pies and cake after the service, giving us chance to spend time with our visitors. Thanks to all who took part and provided refreshments.

28/10/2017 LICENSING SERVICE FOR NEW CHAPLAIN - On Saturday, October 28, the congregation of St John's, along with representatives and the Chaplains of the other Anglican Churches along the Cote d'Azur, and representatives of the Roman Catholic, Russian Orthodox and Eglise Protestante Unie churches, gathered to celebrate the Eucharist. The Archdeacon of France and Monaco, the Venerable Meurig Williams, and the Regional Dean of Southern France, the Revd Canon Giles Williams led the licensing service of the Revd Dr Tom Wilson as our new Chaplain. While many of the St John's congregation have returned to their winter homes, there was still a good sized congregation present. A new feature of this service was that it was live streamed on the congregation's Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/stJohnsStRaphael), and the video is also available there for future viewing. Members of the congregation presented Tom with the symbols of his ministry, including water for baptism, oil for healing, a bible for teaching, a stole to represent leading in a priestly ministry, the keys to the church, a book of children's bible stories, and a cross symbolizing working ecumenically in St-Raphael/Frejus and the Var. Tom also swore oaths of allegiance to the formularies of the Church of England, and his Queen, Elizabeth II as head of the church, and his head of state of Canada, as well as obedience to our diocesan Bishop, the Rt Revd Robert Innes. The small, but mighty, choir of St John's provided wonderful music leadership during this special service. The congregation also experienced, for the first time at St John's, receiving Communion from the celebrant and the Regional Dean and our Chaplain who were standing at the chancel steps. While this was a new way of receiving the Communion, it was a most efficient way to administer it in a timely manner for a large group of people. Of course, no celebration at St John's would be complete without tea, coffee, verre de l'amitie, and all sorts of cakes provided by parishioners, including a delicious welcome cake made by Marylynne. All in all, it was a wonderful celebration of a new ministry with our new Chaplain, Tom Wilson and his wife Dawn Cornelio.

17/09/2017 HARVEST FESTIVAL - Harvest Festival was celebrated at St John's on 17 September, and included the dedication of baby Mia Tilly by Revd Ralph Goldenberg. We are delighted to welcome the Tilly family to St John's. The service was well-attended (over 80 people) and was followed by lunch for 50. Thanks to the choir of 17 for a joyful anthem, Ian Verran - our visiting organist - for such a professional accompaniment, Jane El-Safty and Marion Siggemann for the floral arrangements, Marylynne Hayward for the artistic harvest loaf, Sherlie Bretel, Marylynne Hayward and many others for the catering.
15/09/2017 CHORAL EVENSONG - St John's choir sang their first Choral Evensong service on 15 September, joined by an appreciative congregation and led by Revd Keith Bretel. The visiting organist was Ian Verran, an old friend of St John's choir. The music included S S Wesley's "Lead me, Lord", R A Walmisley's "Magnificat" and "Nunc Dimittis", and W A Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" with soprano soloist Marjorie Harrison.
07/08/2017 New Chaplain - Following interviews back in May, it was the unanimous decision of the appointing panel to offer the post of Chaplain of St John's St Raphael to the Reverend Dr Tom Wilson, until recently parish priest of Holy Trinity and St Barnabas, Paisley, in the Scottish Episcopal Church. Subject to the completion of all paperwork, including the customary Safeguarding clearances, Tom hopes to begin his ministry among us in the Autumn. Bishop Robert and Archdeacon Meurig look forward to being with us when the time comes to welcome Tom and his wife to St John's. Read here what Tom has shared about himself.
11/06/2017 RSCM France visit 11 June - The choir and organist from the RSCM France Residential Weekend, held at a holiday village nearby, came to lead our musical worship on 11 June. They were directed by Adrian Lucas, a former cathedral organist and current conductor of the RSCM Millenium Choir, who also played the organ. The choir led the hymns and communion setting, ably assisted by the congregation (St John's is renowned for its singing), and added two beautiful anthems: "Ubi Caritas" by Ola Gjeilo and "Greater love hath no man" by John Ireland.
