We had a joyful service on Christmas morning, with hearty singing from all. Our two junior members of the congregation helped to light the Advent Wreath for the last time and earned yet more candy canes - a North American speciality imported by our Chaplain's wife for the occasion. 11 of us then stayed for Christmas lunch - 4 courses plus mince pies and petit fours - skillfully prepared by Sherlie Bretel and Marylynne Hayward as always and we are thankful that they use their gifts in the service of the church. As we couldn't be with family or friends for various reasons, it was good to spend the time together. We said goodbye to long-time St John's attender Nils Kock-Petersen, who has had to move farther along the coast to live with his nephew due to failing health - we shall miss his dry sense of humour and his stories.
